Online Dating: the future, or just desperate?

Published by phillyforyou at 10:15 pm under Uncategorized Edit This

Hello my lovely readers,

Recently a friend referred me to the dating site OkCupid.com. Let me start off by saying that the idea of meeting people online both creeps me out and intrigues me. Think about it: there are some real crazies out there, but at the same time, reading someone’s profile before contacting allows you to jump ahead of all of the first-date hooplah.

So I made a profile. Then, I googled more free dating sites and made more profiles. Then I waited.

I have profiles on OkCupid.com, Mingle2.com, and Plentyoffish.com– and I would grade them in that order as well.

OkCupid (or “OkC” as we online vets like to call it…) has pleasing aesthetics and a younger group of people to choose from. The site is more friendly to young adults like myself, who enjoy being able to see who has been viewing my profile, block creepy old guys, and check out forums, where you can learn more about a person than what their “About Me” lets on. OkC has a friendly vibe and some cool features like tons of fun questions you can chose to answer in order to increase your matches, and a “Quiver” application in which the site selects other members that just might make you, well, quiver. Don’t get me wrong though– OkC has its fair share of loonies (take, for example, the nice young gentleman with a “thing” for swiss cheese…) Overall, however, I am enjoying my OkC experience (and so are my friends)!

Mingle2.com is more like OkC’s older, less attractive brother. Most of the members on there (at least it appears to me) are not my preferred age group (19-23). The layout of the site is a little confusing, and overall, I have not found anything truly interesting on this site. They have a matching system, but it pretty much just shows you a picture of someone with “Yes, No, or Maybe” buttons underneath. The only men that caught my attention had not been online for approximately twenty years, although I have been contacted by some (let’s call it) older gentlemen. Overall, I prefer OkCupid much, much more!

Plentyoffish.com… hmm. I am not sure what to say other than the layout is a catastrophe and the site is run by one guy. There is nothing truly great, or inherently terrible to mention. I met one nice 24 year old man that sparked my interest, but he turned out to be 27 with a thing for Disney movies…

Overall, I think that online dating– when done right– can be successful, and maybe even lead you to some great relationships. Sometimes the sites (regardless of which one) can be tedious in that a girl can get several messages complimenting their (ahem) bodies, or requests for sexual encounters. My advice would be to learn how to sift and sort through the crap down to the good ones! I promise you, there are some out there.

Yours truly,

Cass.

P.s.

Do you have a hilarious story about meeting someone online– or perhaps a story about how you met your soulmate on one of the sites mentioned previously? Leave a comment telling me your story!
